Heat Pump vs. Propane Furnace: Which Should You Use in Your RV?

A heat pump and a propane RV furnace can both warm your RV, but they work differently and make sense in different situations. Whether you’re choosing a heating system or deciding which one to run, the better option depends mainly on the weather, your available power, and how much heat your RV needs.

How Do RV Heat Pumps and Propane Furnaces Work?

A heat pump uses electricity to move heat from outdoor air into your RV. Even cool outdoor air still contains heat, which the system can collect and transfer indoors. As outdoor temperatures fall, a heat pump may deliver less heat and have a harder time maintaining the temperature inside your RV.

A propane RV furnace creates heat by burning LP gas. The burner heats a heat exchanger, and a blower moves indoor air across it to distribute warmth through the RV. Exhaust gases stay separate from the air circulating inside and are vented outdoors. Although propane provides the heat, the furnace still needs 12V DC power for the blower, ignition, and controls.

When Does a Heat Pump Make More Sense?

A heat pump is especially useful during mild fall weather, cool mornings, and chilly evenings when suitable AC power is available. It can warm your RV while conserving propane for later in the trip.

It can be a good option when:

  • Outdoor temperatures are within the heat pump’s rated heating range.
  • Its heating capacity is enough to maintain your desired indoor temperature.
  • You have a suitable AC power source available.

Most rooftop RV heat pumps use 120V AC power. Shore power is a common source, although a properly sized generator or battery-and-inverter system can also power the unit. The power source must meet the unit’s starting and running requirements; a standard 12V battery connection alone is not enough.

There is no universal outdoor temperature for switching to a furnace. Check the heating range and capacity of the model you own or are considering.

When Is a Propane RV Furnace the Better Choice?

A propane RV furnace is a practical choice for colder-weather travel and camping without 120V hookups. It burns LP gas to produce heat and uses the RV’s 12V system to power the blower, ignition, and controls.

It may be the better option when:

  • You regularly camp in colder weather and need a heating system sized for your RV’s heating demand.
  • You stay at off-grid sites and want to heat your RV using propane and house-battery power.

If you also have a heat pump, the furnace gives you another heating option when outdoor temperatures fall below the heat pump’s rated heating range or it can no longer maintain your desired indoor temperature.

Do You Need Both?

Not necessarily. If most of your trips are in mild weather and you usually stay at powered campgrounds, a suitable heat pump may meet most of your heating needs. For colder trips or camping without suitable AC power, a propane furnace is generally more practical.

Having both gives you more flexibility as weather and campsite conditions change. Whether that flexibility is worthwhile depends on where and when you travel.

If your RV already has both systems, check how the thermostat controls them. Some systems provide automatic furnace backup, while others require you to select the heating source manually. Follow the control instructions for your specific RV and equipment.

A Simple Way to Decide

Mild weather with suitable AC power:
A heat pump can be a good choice if its heating range and capacity meet your needs.

Temperatures beyond the heat pump’s capabilities, or no suitable AC power:
A propane furnace is generally more practical, provided you have enough propane and 12V power.

Check the overnight forecast, not just the afternoon temperature. A system that handles a mild afternoon may not provide enough heat later that night.
